Single Marine Program Days of Service
Jcravens42: created this page
Single Marine Program Days of Service is a volunteer week and annual event by the United States Marine Corps. It celebrates Marine Corps member involvement in their respective communities in the USA or abroad, encourages Marines to participate in and lead volunteer initiatives to benefit their local communities, and to use volunteering as a way to develop leadership. The event is held in April and targets single Marines - those who are unmarried - or those who are in a deployment or base away from their families. 2019 is its fifth year.
Background
The first Single Marine Program Days of Service event was in 2015, and it has been held annually since. The event encourages Marines to volunteer in their local communities. It is part of the Single Marine Program (SMP), established in 1995 and designed to address concerns that many young, single Marines were unhappy with overall Marine Corps life. The 2017 event had 7,000 Marines participating as volunteers in their communities, contributing nearly 29,500 hours of service.
As noted by Robert B. Neller, General, U.S. Marine Corps, Commandant of the Marine Corps, in a March 2019 press release, "Volunteerism strengthens the Marine Corps community's ability to serve on a greater scale. It is a representation of the continued mission to do something larger than ourselves. Volunteering in the community also enhances the ability to serve those we are leading, and makes us all better leaders and mentors."

Participants, as volunteers, spend time with retired military veterans, clean beaches, help at animal shelters, participate in Habitat for Humanity builds and more.
