Mayo was born in [[Hampden, Maine]]. He went to Hampden Academy. Mayo then went to [[Wesleyan University]] from 1850 to 1852. He was admitted to the Minnesota bar in 1862 and practiced law in [[Sauk Rapids, Minnesota]]. Mayo was involved in the real estate business, practiced medicine, and was a druggist in Sauk Rapids. Mayo served as probate judge, school superintendent, distract court clerk, coroner, and treasurer for [[Benton County, Minnesota]].
